An estimated 10% of the world, or 650 million people, live with a disability.
520 million, or 80% of those people live in a developing nation.
Over 90% of the children with disabilities in those developing nations do not attend school.
Many children with disabilities are not afforded an education simply because they are not prepared for school. Through a process known as Early Intervention, Ability Beyond the Horizon plans to support infants and toddlers through research based practices successfully used around the world to prepare children with disabilities for success in school, and in life.
We are just getting started, but rapidly moving forward. We're currently developing projects in both Vietnam and India, if you'd like to read more in depth about our efforts in either of these two incredible countries, have a look at our Programs Page. If you'd like to learn how this all began, please read our blog. If you want to make a difference, visit our Get Involved page.
We adapt the curriculum to meet the need of the culture we support, training local people to provide these valuable services, maintaining cultural sensitivity, while encouraging growth toward higher expectations of people with disabilities in their country.
In many countries disability is an embarrassment. Often, people feel that a child with a disability is a punishment on the family. This sort of thinking can result in neglect, abuse, or low expectations of the child. With this kind of a beginning in life, chances of success are not high. Research has shown that appropriate early intervention can change this, you can help!
Making a real difference can be accomplished with as little as $25. With the cost of one week’s worth of coffee you can pay a teacher in Vietnam to work part time for a month! That teacher will work with 10 children, over the course of the month, forever improving their lives; that’s a real difference! Please click here to learn more, and to Get Involved!
